was passing Conor Daly on the outside of turn four when Daly had the back end of his car get loose and then turn into Newgarden’s path. A scary crash ensued involving Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden. Daly got loose and slammed into Newgarden causing Josef to flip on to his side and skid towards the safer barrier. Newgarden’s car was completely destroyed. Daly was okay and walked away under his own power. Newgarden exited the car with help from the safety crew. Upon getting out of the car, he collapsed on the track. He eventually was speaking and coherent before being taken off on a stretcher. Newgarden waved to the crowd as he exited indicated he was okay.
IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden suffered a fractured right clavicle and a small fracture of the right hand in a double-impact crash Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. The crash occurred on Lap 42 of the Firestone 600, which was stopped shortly thereafter by a second day of heavy rain. Due to a poor weather forecast and IndyCar’s scheduled tests at other tracks this week, the race, originally scheduled for Saturday night, was postponed to Aug. 27. The Saturday race will restart at 8:15 p.m. EDT. The contact drove both cars hard into the wall, but it was a secondary hit that was most troublesome. Newgarden's car was not only heavily damaged, it was turned on its side with the top of the cockpit hitting the wall. Newgarden was slow to get out of the car, but seemed to do so under his own power. Seconds later, the 25-year-old American grabbed his right shoulder and slumped to the ground. Newgarden was later diagnosed with a fractured right collarbone and a small fracture of his right hand. Daly was not injured and accepted responsibility for the accident.
